WASHINGTON (CNS) -- A just-released survey found increasing numbers of American Catholics say sex abuse is a major problem for the Church that needs to be addressed, more than a similar survey showed a month earlier.
But Catholics also indicated the scandal had not affected their faith.
The new survey found that 71 per cent of Catholics said the sex abuse issue is a "major problem that demands immediate attention," up from 48 per cent the month before who said they felt the same way.
Also, 71 per cent termed the ongoing sex abuse scandals a "crisis" for the Church, while 66 per cent disapproved of how the Church had handled the clergy sex abuse problem.
In the poll, conducted jointly by [US] ABC News, the Washington Post and Beliefnet.com, 70 per cent said they were either angry or dissatisfied with how the Church was handling the situation; 36 per cent said they were "angry" and 34 per cent said they were "dissatisfied but not angry."
