Myth of 56k
There is much confusion these days regarding "56K" modems. Many people assume they provide the same advantages as ISDN but its speed can be considerably reduced by older phone equipment and poor line quality.

Telephone Ports
iDSL replaces your existing phone line with two digital lines which can be used for voice and data. Your modem will automatically drop one of the two channels so you can make or receive phone calls while staying connected to the Internet at the same time. read more...

6. How fast is iDSL?

1. What is iDSL?

iDSL is an Internet Digital Subscriber Line that provides high speed data access, faster and clearer than that available from your traditional 'analogue' based modem. An iDSL connection can carry voice, data, images, and video at high speed all on your existing copper wire phone line which is in most homes and businesses today although extra equipment is required from Telstra.

Your telephone line, while fine for voice calls, was never designed with the current requirements of information technology in mind. iDSL is a replacement of your old telephone service, and using the current wiring, your calls to the Internet will be of much higher quality, faster speed and durability (meaning, minimal unwanted disconnection's!). At this time, no other technology comes close to giving you such possibilities through a single phone line. There has never been a better time to upgrade to iDSL with availability being widespread all over Western Australia.

2. What are the advantages of upgrading to iDSL?

iDSL is designed to meet the needs of residential customers and not just businesses.

An iDSL connection offers two digital lines with an inbuilt modem which you connect to your PC for fast Internet access. The truth is 56K modems are not yet "up to speed". It's speed can be considerably reduced by older phone equipment and poor line quality. With iDSL your old cables are replaced with new, clear digital lines, not only giving you super-speed connection to the Internet, but also increasing the value of your home.

In most cases you'll not only keep your existing telephone number, you can save time and money by transmitting data, video and images at speeds much faster than with analogue modems. There is no longer the need for separate lines for the telephone, fax and computer which an obvious advantage for any business large or small.

3. What do I need to get connected?

To install iDSL you need to upgrade your telephone line with a Telstra OnRamp which provides you with two digital lines so you can make or receive two calls simultaneously or make or receive a call while accessing the Internet or sending a fax. Businesses that require more than two lines can use multiple OnRamp services, or choose from the primary rate OnRamp services which provide 10, 20 or 30 digital lines.

Any new computer can handle iDSL capabilities, but the minimum we require is a Pentium PC running Windows (95 +) or NT (v4 +). You can use your existing 56k analogue modem and still get a true 56k speed or you can upgrade to a NETjet ISDN Card and get speeds up to 128k.

The Digital Lifestyle Service plans allow you to stay online using speeds of up to 64K for a day at a time. These accounts are subject to a "fair-use" provision. If your session has been connected the longest, during busy times you may be disconnected. You can reconnect after waiting at least fifteen minutes. Our policy of having at least 1% free line capacity available during peak periods, (currently Monday to Wednesday 9:30pm to 10:30pm) means we have hundreds of free lines available outside these hours.
