Pell appointed to Vatican body
ROMAN Catholic Archbishop of Sydney George Pell has been appointed to an influential Vatican body to develop Catholic policy on contentious issues like genetic engineering, abortion and homosexuality.
Dr Pell, a social conservative, has won a place on the Pontifical Council for the Family, according to Sydney's Archdiocesan newspaper.
The paper said the council was the part of the Roman Curia responsible for working for the defence of human life and the pastoral care of the family.
The Roman Curia website says the council deals with issues including sex education, contraception, abortion, sterilisation and pastoral problems relating to AIDS.
