SECTIONS of the Catholic Church in the United States are questioning whether to drop the rule that priests must remain celibate.
More than 100,000 copies of The Pilot, an official Church newspaper, were distributed after Mass on Sunday in the archdiocese of Boston.
In it, an editorial asked whether ending the abstinence requirement should prevent sexual abuse.
"If celibacy were optional, would there be fewer scandals of this nature in the priesthood?" it asked. "Does priesthood, in fact, attract a disproportionate number of men with a homosexual orientation?"
Cardinal Bernard Law, Boston's [R.C.] archbishop, said the editorial simply repeated questions raised by others.
Cardinal Law was criticised after it emerged that Church officials knew about child sexual abuse allegations against Father John Geoghan and simply moved him rather than disciplining or treating him.
Since January, at least 55 priests facing abuse allegations in 17 US dioceses have been removed.
The Boston archdiocese has named more than 80 present and former priests suspected of child abuse over 50 years. --THE TELEGRAPH GROUP, LONDON
