THE Governor-General's attempt to weather the child sex allegations storm has suffered a fresh blow, with another charity dumping him as a patron. |
Plan International Australia, which helps children in war-torn and impoverished countries, decided to dump Peter Hollingworth after he appeared to blame a girl aged 14 for instigating an affair with a clergyman in the 1950s.
Similar decisions have been made by Barnardos Australia and the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
Calls for Dr Hollingworth's resignation intensified last month after he told the ABC's Australian Story that he did not believe the girl had been abused and "rather, it was the other way around".
A spokeswoman for Dr Hollingworth declined yesterday to comment on the latest dumping but supporters have pointed to the fact that he is not an official patron of Plan International. __________

Protocol requires that the Governor-General offers his patronage to organisations exclusively. Plan International has 27 other patrons including Perth broadcasters Peter Holland and Greg Pearce. Plan International national executive director Ian Wishart said the charity had severed links with Dr Hollingworth, who accepted an offer of patronage in 1997, because his comments were anathema to its mission of helping children.
It believed they were vulnerable to exploitation by adults, as shown by the prevalence of child prostitution and child soldiers in Third World countries.
"We could never say that it was their fault," he said. "They have always been manipulated, tricked or abused by adults and it is never, ever acceptable to say the child was somehow complicit."
On Monday, the abused woman at the centre of the row met Dr Hollingworth and accepted an apology for his inaction over the case when he was Anglican archbishop of Brisbane. He reportedly told her he had come to realise he had a poor understanding of child sexual abuse.
Meanwhile, a priest who was appointed rector of two parishes by Dr Hollingworth when he was archbishop has been jailed for the sexual abuse of five boys.
The Rev. John Elliott, 60, pleaded guilty in the District Court in Brisbane to 10 counts of sodomy and 18 of indecent dealing with five boys aged 10 to 13.
The offences occurred 29 years ago before he became a priest.
District Court Judge Warren Howell sentenced Elliott to 7 1/2 years' jail with a recommendation for parole after 2 1/2 years. -- with AUSTRALIAN ASSOCIATED PRESS
