BRISBANE, Queensland, Australia: The Anglican Church's inquiry into sex-abuse yesterday claimed its first scalp when Gilbert Case, who headed the church's schools in Queensland, resigned. Mr Case, who cited errors in judgment, also announced he would resign his position from the Anglican Diocese Council. In a written statement yesterday, Mr Case admitted responsibility for referring innocent and vulnerable schoolchildren to school counsellor and paedophile Kevin "Skippy" Lynch who then sexually abused them. "I have spoken to many victims over the last six years. With some, sadly, I have had to admit a special responsibility -- that I was the one who referred them for counselling, and trusted that Kevin Lynch would help them," Mr Case said. . . . Mr Case's departure followed what Anglican Archbishop Dr Phillip Aspinall yesterday described delicately as a "separation agreement", made more complex by his predecessor -- Governor-General Dr Peter Hollingworth -- being aware of Mr Case's alleged shortcomings when he promoted him to the job. The church Board of Inquiry's report tabled in State Parliament last week found that Mr Case, headmaster of St Paul's School at Bald Hills from 1979 to 2000, had "erroneously and untenably" assessed a student's complaint of abuse by Lynch as "vexatious, vindictive, and entirely without foundation". . . . The appointment was made a month after The Courier-Mail reported that Lynch - who committed suicide in 1997 - had abused scores of children at Brisbane Grammar School and at St Paul's School. -- The Courier-Mail (Brisbane), http://www.couriermail.news.com.au/ common/story_page/ 0,5936, 6398548 %255E952,00.html , by Chris Griffith, May 8 03

• The painful spotlight of reality TV. AUSTRALIA: Never has a vice-regal statement been couched in such terms. Never has a governor-general fronted the cameras in such unimaginable fashion. The nation watched agog yesterday as its nominal head of state, Peter Hollingworth, pitched headlong into a new public controversy involving sex and his previous church life. The controversy, incredibly, has Dr Hollingworth fending off allegations of rape on top of his admitted mishandling of sexual abuse cases involving Anglican priests. The Governor-General is now enmeshed in a murky court case that involves the tragic death of his accuser and events dating back 40 years. Emphasising the almost surreal nature of this affair, the two-page declaration issued out of Yarralumla yesterday afternoon carries the heading: "Denial of rape allegation." -- Sydney Morning Herald, http://www.smh.com.au/ articles/ 2003/05/08/ 1052280381539.html , Analysis, (Circulated by Poynteronline, Posted by Kathy Shaw for 9:34:06 AM) By Michael Millett, May 9 2003.
• Four priests named in suit SCHENECTADY (NY): Four priests, three from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, were named in a lawsuit filed Wednesday in state Supreme Court seeking $600,000 in damages for a man who said he was sexually abused by each of the priests and stalked by one of them. Attorney John Aretakis, of Manhattan, filed a lawsuit naming the Rev. Alan D. Jupin, the Rev. Louis E. Douglas and the Rev. Donald Ophals, all active within the diocese, and the Rev. Neil Cawlings, who was visiting from England when the alleged abuse occurred in the 1970s. Bishop Howard J. Hubbard, the Rev. Kenneth Doyle, the diocese chancellor, and the diocese itself were also named in the lawsuit. The causes of action specified in the lawsuit include negligence, emotional distress and civil harassment. As of late Wednesday, the diocese had not removed the priests from ministry. -- Daily Gazette, http://www.dailygazette.com/main.shtml#story76600002 , By Jill Bryce.
• Bishop Dupre ponders retiring SPRINGFIELD (MA): The Most Rev. Thomas L. Dupre, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield, said this week he is considering retiring due to ill health. "I have not made any plans that I want to make public, but I have been thinking about it (retirement) seriously for two years," he said this week. Dupre said he will retire before reaching age 75, the mandatory retirement age for bishops. He turns 70 Nov. 10. . . . Dupre, who has been bishop in Springfield for eight years, has been suffering from back and heart problems. A herniated disk left him "crippled for three months" last year, he said. However, he has been on the job without any prolonged absence for the last 15 months during the clergy sexual-abuse crisis. The bishop said the job has become stressful, a situation that can directly affect his health. -- The Republican, http://www.masslive.com/ springfield/ republican/ index.ssf?/base/news-4/1052379207192860.xml , By Bill Zajac.
• Pastor charged with sexually abusing teen [CURRENT]. ITHACA, N.Y.: Police have charged a Baptist minister with sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl in his home. The Rev. Daris Dixon-Clark, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Ithaca, is scheduled to appear in Town of Ithaca Court on May 14 on charges of third-degree sexual abuse, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors. Dixon-Clark was arrested Monday and arraigned in Town of Newfield Court by Justice Gary Allen. He was released on his own recognizance. Allen issued an order of protection for the victim. Dixon-Clark was appointed interim minister at the Ithaca church in 1995 when the former pastor, The Rev. William Johnson Jr., was released from his duties after he was found guilty of statutory rape of a 13-year-old member of the congregation. -- Newsday, http://www.newsday.com/ news/local/wire/ ny-bc-ny-- ministercharged05 08may08,0,4070365. story?coll=ny-ap- regional-wire , May 8, 2003, 8:59 AM EDT.
• Brotherhood denies involvement AUSTRALIA: The Brotherhood of St Laurence said in a statement it had known nothing about the allegations of sexual assault involving Governor-General Peter Hollingworth. The welfare organisation, for whom Dr Hollingworth was working at the time of the alleged offence, said it learned of today's events through the media. Dr Hollingworth has vehemently denied the claim. "The Brotherhood of St Laurence is not a party to this action in the Victorian Supreme Court," the statement said. "As we're not aware of any specific details of the action we're not able to make any comment." • Shrink-priest blasted clergy, victim without meeting them. BOSTON (MA):: A Harvard psychiatrist who is also a Jesuit priest routinely wrote stinging assessments of clerics and at least one alleged sexual abuse victim without ever meeting them, archdiocese records show. The Rev. Dr. Edwin "Ned" Cassem, who is affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital, penned an affidavit last year calling alleged victim Paul Edwards a sociopath." In 1994, he said the Rev. Paul R. Shanley's "pathology is beyond repair" - though he never met either man. He similarly declared in 1994 the Rev. James D. Foley was "unstable" and "highly charged sexually" in notes taken by now-Bishop John B. McCormack, who with other church leaders sought Cassem's evaluations on at least nine priests. Those assessments have sparked outrage from accusers and defenders alike. "It's absolutely reckless," said Edwards, whose accusation against Msgr. Michael Smith Foster was dismissed by the church following Cassem's affidavit. "Good or bad for the victim or for the perpetrator, this type of evaluation is absolutely intolerable," Edwards said. Paul Shannon, a longtime Shanley friend, called it "bizarre." -- Boston Herald, http://www2.bostonherald.com/ news/local_regional/ shri05082003.htm , by Robin Washington. Thursday, May 8, 2003
• Church says spokeswoman Morrissey has left the job. BOSTON (MA): Donna M. Morrissey, who served as the public face of the Archdiocese of Boston throughout the clergy sexual abuse crisis, has left her job as spokeswoman for the church. Morrissey, who was brought in to improve the church's public relations in January 2001, left the archdiocese on April 28, a spokesman for the archdiocese said yesterday. Her tenure was dominated by the worst public-relations crisis in the history of the church, as the archdiocese struggled to explain why it had failed to remove scores of abusive priests from ministry. "Donna Morrissey has moved on and is no longer in the employ of the Archdiocese of Boston," said the spokesman, the Rev. Christopher J. Coyne. "We are looking for a senior person to take over" communications and public relations, he added. -- Boston Globe, http://www.boston.com/ dailyglobe2/128/metro/ Church_says_spokeswoman_ Morrissey_has_left_the_ jobP.shtml , May 8 03
• Catholic lay group still seeking its voice in the church. WINCHESTER (MA): Bob Morris stood before 65 people in the chilly basement of Saint Eulalia's Church in Winchester last week and took a deep breath. It was time for a pep talk. "Some say that Voice of the Faithful is on the fringes of the Catholic Church," Morris said into the microphone. "But how many of you have taught [religious education]?" he asked. Several people in the crowd raised their hands. "How many of you have served as eucharistic ministers? How many of you are on your parish councils? How many of you participate in food pantries and other service endeavors?" he continued, becoming more animated with each question, as more hands shot up. Voice of the Faithful was started in Wellesley in February 2002 by Catholics upset by the clergy sex abuse crisis. The group has grown into a nationwide organization that claims to have 30,000 members, including about 10,000 in Eastern Massachusetts. The Winchester chapter, one of the first in the suburbs northwest of Boston, was formed May 13 last year. -- Boston Globe, http://www.boston.com/ dailyglobe2/128/northwest/ Catholic_lay_group_ still_seeking_its_voice_ in_the_churchP.shtml , By Christine McConville, May 8 2003
• Church plan to flush out pedophiles. AUSTRALIA: The Anglican Primate of Australia, Peter Carnley, has reacted to the Hollingworth crisis with a plan to cleanse his Perth archdiocese of pedophile clerics by cancelling the licences of all priests and not reinstating them until they clear police checks into their backgrounds. The spectre of Governor-General Peter Hollingworth's future continued to overshadow the world trip of the Prime Minister, who from London last night accused Labor leader Simon Crean of political opportunism over the furore. Speaking after an audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, Mr Howard flatly rejected Mr Crean's call to disclose what he had reported to the Queen and whether his meeting canvassed Dr Hollingworth's future. Dr Carnley revealed his plan to fellow archbishops in a telephone conference yesterday morning, called to discuss the Hollingworth crisis and wider efforts to deal with child abuse in Anglican institutions. -- The Australian, http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/ common/story_ page/0,5744, 6400845%255 E2702,00.html) , By Kate Legge and Dennis Shanahan, May 08, 2003.
• Church probes 157 abuse cases. AUSTRALIA: The Anglican Church in Queensland was investigating more than 150 cases of abuse, Archbishop of Brisbane Dr Phillip Aspinall said today. He has also criticised as too slow the Queensland Blue Card system which is supposed to guarantee the suitability of people to work with children. Dr Aspinall said that since he had arrived in Brisbane five clergy had had their licences suspended pending investigation and that the church had opened 157 files relating to complaints of abuse. He said although he did not have all the details, some of the clergy had been reinstated. But where investigations had revealed concerns, the church would continue to monitor them. -- The Age (Melbourne), http://www.theage.com.au/ articles/ 2003/05/08/ 1052280368399.html , May 8 2003.
• Cover-up left paedophile to prey on Vic altar boys. AUSTRALIA: It is a shocking story of abuse of boys by an Anglican priest in a small country town, a story that carries with it the now-familiar theme of denial that protected the perpetrator and enabled him to continue to prey on new victims. It raises questions about obstruction of a police investigation that is now being probed by the Ethical Standards Division of the Victoria Police. And in its wake there is a trail of bitterness and broken lives, and once again a sense of betrayal by the church. As the Anglican Church in Queensland continues to weather a storm over its handling of allegations of sexual abuse and the Governor-General contemplates his future over his role in that saga, the 7:30 Report has unearthed details of another church scandal in Victoria. -- ABC (Australia), http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2003/s849496. htm , Reporter: Heather Ewart.

• For I have sinned . . . ARIZONA: An infamous history. A history of shame. But only now, decades later, as a local prosecutor digs into mountains of testimony, can we appreciate the pervasiveness of evil, evil committed by men of God, evil protected by their bishops, the successors of the Apostles. That is the sad conclusion we draw from the prodigious reporting work of The Arizona Republic's Joseph A. Reaves and Kelly Ettenborough. Their work, which appeared Sunday, demonstrates that far from being an isolated problem, the scandal of sex abuse touched at least 42 of the 88 parishes in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix since 1970. In so many cases, priests who were accused of sexual misconduct were not disciplined or defrocked. They were reassigned - to three area high schools, the Newman Center at Northern Arizona University and to 17 parishes with elementary schools attached. How could these things happen? What logic on Earth would direct these troubled priests to the very places where they could - and did - find scores of new and vulnerable victims? -- The Arizona Republic, http://www.azcentral.com/ arizonarepublic/ opinions/articles/ 0508thur1-08.html , May 8, 2003 12:00 AM.
• Dr Hollingworth's public statement. AUSTRALIA: "Earlier this year steps were taken to institute civil proceedings seeking financial payment by a woman who has subsequently and tragically died. As part of those proceedings, this woman alleged that I raped her in the 1960s, when she was 19 or 20 years of age. I did not know this woman. I did not rape her. I did not sexually assault her. I deny absolutely that I have ever raped or in any way sexually assaulted any person. The incident alleged against me is said to have happened during the course of a youth camp that it is claimed I organised and attended as camp counsellor and coordinator in late 1965 or early 1966. It is asserted that I was then a servant, agent or representative of the Anglican Diocese of Bendigo. It is further alleged that I had become acquainted with this woman at a Friday night youth group conducted by that Diocese at St John's Church hall in North Bendigo. -- The Australian, http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/ common/story_page/ 0,5744, 6402321 %255E2702,00.html , May 08, 2003.
• Bishop defends church property transfers. BEND (OR): The Roman Catholic bishop for Eastern Oregon testified Wednesday that he planned to transfer millions of dollars in property to individual churches to comply with church law, not to shield the diocese from a sexual-abuse lawsuit brought by former altar boys. The Most Rev. Robert Vasa, bishop of the Diocese of Baker, acknowledged that he was aware of the sexual-abuse lawsuit and a written confession from a priest when he established individual corporations for each of the 60 parishes and missions within the diocese last year. Vasa said his intention was to bring the corporate organization of the diocese into compliance with a 1911 directive from the Vatican by giving title for the churches to the parishes and missions that had paid for them. He added that he wanted to duplicate the organization of the Diocese of Lincoln, Neb., where he was vicar general before being named bishop of Baker in 1999. Vasa was called as a witness in Deschutes County Circuit Court by David Slader, attorney for 18 former altar boys claiming they were sexually abused by the late Rev. David Hazen during the 1950s and 1960s, when Hazen was a priest at various churches in the Diocese of Baker. -- Statesman Journal, http://news.statesmanjournal.com/article.cfm?i=61188 , by Jeff Barnard, The Associated Press, May 8, 2003
• Diocese facing another lawsuit. ALBANY (NY): Attorney John Aretakis, who represents dozens of alleged clergy abuse victims, filed suit Wednesday against an area priest for recently stalking and harassing an alleged victim, and against three other priests because the stalking priest was doing so on their behalf. The suit, which asks for $600,000 plus punitive damages, marks the fourth official action taken by Aretakis against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, also named in this suit because the employer has responsibility for its employees. Aretakis, during a press conference Wednesday, alleges that in 1976, when his now 42-year-old client was 16 years old, Rev. Alan Jupin got the teen drunk and raped him. The statute of limitations has long expired for criminal charges to be filed on the alleged abuse, but the case is based on the premise that Jupin stalked and harassed his client in June, 2002, and again in February. -- Troy Record, http://www.troyrecord.com/ site/news.cfm?newsid =7947538&BRD =1170 &PAG =461&dept_id =7021&rfi=6) , By James V. • Priest named in lawsuit. WILMINGTON (DE): A retired priest who for years has celebrated Masses at several churches in Wilmington has been accused of sexually abusing a minor during the late 1970s in a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in New York. The Rev. Louis E. Douglas, who moved to Wilmington in 1996 after retiring from the Albany, N.Y., diocese, has been accused with three other Albany priests of sexually molesting, abusing and preying upon a boy between 1975 and 1979. The Supreme Court lawsuit, which asks for $600,000 in damages, also accuses the 74-year-old priest of molesting other adolescent males both before and after the late 1970s. Douglas has celebrated Masses at St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Elizabeth, Christ Our King and St. Patrick's churches in Wilmington, said Bob Krebs, spokesman for the Wilmington diocese. "He has been helping out on an as-needed basis in some of our parishes," he said. • Three priests accused of abuse. ALBANY (NY): Three Albany Diocese priests still in active ministry were accused in a lawsuit Wednesday of sexual misconduct, marking the first time during the clergy abuse scandal that working priests have been named in local court papers. The suit alleges a pattern of intimidation to prevent a 43-year-old teacher in Schenectady from coming forward with complaints that he was "passed around" in the 1970s by the priests, who knew he was a teenager from a broken home and "in need of a father figure," according to the suit. The three priests named in the lawsuit were the Rev. Louis Douglas, who is officially retired; the Rev. Alan Jupin, pastor at Our Lady of Fatima in Schenectady; and the Rev. Donald Ophals, pastor at St. Francis DeSales in Troy. Douglas, who left Albany's St. Catherine of Siena in 1992, was immediately barred from public ministry by the Diocese of Wilmington, Del., where he had been working part time in parishes for seven years, a spokesman for the Delaware church said. -- Albany Times-Union, http://www.timesunion.com/ AspStories/story.asp ?storyID=132401 &category=FRONTPG&BCCode =HOME&newsdate=5/8/2003 , By Andrew Tilghman, Thursday, May 8, 2003.

• Personal records barred in church abuse case. BOSTON (MA): A state Superior Court judge has rejected as "intrusive" a motion by the Archdiocese of Boston to obtain the medical, psychological, and employment records of Paula and Rodney Ford, the parents of a Newton man who says he was sexually abused as a boy by the Rev. Paul R. Shanley, court documents show. Lawyers for the archdiocese had sought the records as part of what many legal observers saw as a new and more aggressive approach to defending the Ford case. But Suffolk Superior Court Judge Constance M. Sweeney said the bid for the records was too broad and too speculative. "The defendant asks the plaintiffs Paula and Rodney Ford to turn over their respective medical and psychological records covering their entire lifetimes," Sweeney wrote. "Such an intrusive inquiry, which isn't encapsulated by any timeline but the plaintiffs' respective birth dates, is not reasonably calculated to lead to the discovery of admissible evidence." Rodney Ford said the ruling was welcome news after a "disheartening" few weeks during which lawyers for the archdiocese tried to shift the blame for the abuse of Gregory Ford from Shanley to others, including Rodney Ford. -- Boston Globe, http://www.globe.com/ dailyglobe2/128/metro/ Personal_ records_ barred_ in_church_abuse_caseP.shtml) , By Ralph Ranalli, May 8 2003.
• Oz governor general denies rape claim. AUSTRALIA: Australian Governor General Peter Hollingworth, already under pressure to resign for allegedly covering up sex abuse, revealed on Thursday that he himself faced rape allegations dating back to the 1960s. Hollingworth, the Queen's representative in Australia, was forced to deny the rape allegations in a televised address hours after it emerged that he had obtained a court order suppressing details of the case. "I did not know this woman. I did not rape her," Hollingworth declared, saying he must have been a victim of mistaken identity. Order obtained to prevent public airing of claim. The case came to light after the Labour opposition revealed early on Thursday that Hollingworth's lawyers obtained a suppression order earlier this year to stop the allegations being aired publicly. Within hours, Hollingworth's lawyers asked for the gag order to be lifted so he could make a public statement on the matter. The surprise admission immediately fuelled new demands that Hollingworth resign from his position as Australia's ceremonial head of state. -- Iafrica.com , http://iafrica.com/ news/worldnews/234880.htm , by Neil Sands, Posted Thu, 08 May 2003.

In an extraordinary twist to the furore surrounding the vice-regal office, the governor-general revealed the rape allegation in a statement recorded for television. • Priest 'asked prostitutes to dress as nuns' [CURRENT]. ITALY: Police say an Italian priest who asked prostitutes to dress as nuns was among the clients of a brothel raided by the vice squad. Officers refuse to name the priest, but say he was a regular customer of the high-class brothel which had dozens of women, including students and housewives, on its books. • Bishop defends assets transfer amid sex abuse allegations. BEND (OR): In a courtroom setting that no one would confuse with a church, the bishop of the Bend-based Catholic Diocese of Baker took the witness stand Wednesday and defended his efforts to transfer millions of dollars of church property and other assets to about 60 parishes across Central and Eastern Oregon. The Most Rev. Robert Vasa said he had been contemplating the change in business structure since arriving from Nebraska three years ago, and that it had nothing to do with a $68 million lawsuit brought by 18 alleged priest sex abuse victims. But while Vasa denied Portland lawyer David Slader's claim of a "shell game" move to avoid paying major damages, the bishop did say that the current setup, with all assets held by the diocese, has lost contributions and bequests from some parishioners who fear a large damage award would divert the funds, which they want used for their local church's needs. At a February hearing, Deschutes County Circuit Judge Michael Adler issued a temporary restraining order blocking the assets transfer, pending the hearing on a requested permanent injunction. The case is being closely watched, as one with broad financial implications for the Roman Catholic Church in America, and efforts to protect assets from lawsuits. -- Bend.com , http://www.bend.com/ news/ar_view%5E3Far_ id%5E3D9398.htm , By Barney Lerten, barney@bend.com , Originally Posted May 7, 2003

• Abuse suit seeks $150M. SYRACUSE (NY): A $150 million lawsuit accuses a prominent Syracuse priest of sexually abusing a boy 40 years ago. The Rev. James F. Quinn, 69, director of the Office of Vocation Promotion, has "agreed to go on temporary leave until he is exonerated," according to a statement from the Syracuse Diocese. Since 1994, Quinn has recruited candidates for the priesthood. According to a lawsuit filed Friday in Oneida County, Quinn sexually abused and exploited the boy from 1963 to 1970. At the time, Quinn was assistant pastor of St. Agnes Church, Utica. The church also operated a grammar school, which the boy attended. The abuse began when the boy was 13, the suit says. The suit, filed by Utica lawyer Frank Policelli, seeks $100 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages. • G-G may have given 'faulty' statements. AUSTRALIA: A new storm of controversy is surrounding Governor-General Peter Hollingworth. There are now allegations he gave faulty recollections in his statutory declaration to the Board of Inquiry investigating the child sex abuse claims in the Anglican Church. With Prime Minister John Howard still overseas, one of his senior Cabinet members has responded to the damning claims made by the Board of Inquiry. It alleges Dr Hollingworth, while Governor-General, gave it faulty statements. "I would be very concerned if he was involved in condoning or otherwise protecting people in relation to those issues," Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock said. It is unclear at this stage whether the Prime Minister is aware of the new allegations, but he continues to show unwavering support for Dr Hollingworth. "There is nothing in his conduct as Governor-General that would warrant or support a recommendation from me to the Queen that his appointment be terminated — beyond that I don't have anything to add," said Mr Howard. • Hollingworth defenders mistaken, says report author. AUSTRALIA: Defenders of Governor-General Peter Hollingworth's handling of child sex abuse claims were mistaken that the era excused his behaviour, an author of a report on abuse said today. Frida Briggs, emeritus professor of child development at the University of South Australia, said the report she wrote about abuse in the Anglican Church while Dr Hollingworth was Brisbane archbishop had been misunderstood. "The people who are saying that the archbishop was acting in relation to handling the abuse in keeping with the era are mistaken," Professor Briggs told ABC Radio. "We're talking about 1990s, we're talking about ... statements that were made as recently as last year. "We have to remember that child sexual abuse has been recognised as a very damaging problem for a very long time." But according to 38-year-old Kenneth Morrison, Law and the diocese looked the other way while he and two brothers were allegedly abused by Rev. George Broussard in the early 70s. "It happened in the altar, in the rectory, behind the altar, under the altar, in the basement," Morrison said. -- TheJacksonChannel.com , http://www.thejacksonchannel.com/ news/2188700/detail.html ,
• Man makes claims against priests. ALBANY (NY): Another area man is claiming he was sexually abused by at least five priests back in the 1970s. Attorney John Aretakis will only identify the man as John Doe Number Four, and another civil suit has been filed against four of the five priests, Bishop Hubbard, and the Albany Diocese. Aretakis said his client was a minor when the alleged abuse occurred. He said, "There was contact, there was touching, there was grabbing, feeling and rubbing. I don't want to get too graphic, but it's clearly as what's defined as a mid-40's man having inappropriate sexual contact with a 16 to 17-year-old boy." Father Kenneth Doyle of the Albany Diocese, who is also named in the lawsuit but is not accused of abuse, said an investigation is ongoing. • Wilmington Priest Named In Sex Abuse Suit. WILMINGTON, DE (KYW) A retired priest living in Delaware has been named in a sexual misconduct lawsuit filed in Albany, New York. CBS 3's Esther Miller reports Father Louis Douglas has been asked by the Wilmington Diocese not to perform public ministry after learning that a 42-year-old Albany man is alleging sexual abuse at the hands of the priest 26 years ago. The plaintiff's lawyer says the diocese was aware that there was something in his past. Diocese officials admit that they were informed of a complaint but were told it had been investigated and the priest cleared of all wrongdoing. Father Douglas most recently filled in at Christ Our King Church at 28th and Madison Streets presiding over Mass whenever a priest was sick or otherwise unavailable. That was until word of the lawsuit surfaced. -- KYW, http://kyw.com/ Local%20News/ local_story_ 12718 3116.html , May 7, 2003 6:28 pm US/Eastern.
• State declines to prosecute Tucson priest accused of sexual misconduct [1999]. TUCSON (AZ): The Arizona Attorney General's Office will not criminally charge a Tucson priest accused of sexual misconduct by a Casa Grande man. The priest remains on a paid leave of absence. The Rev. Steven G. Stencil's status as a priest will be reviewed by the Catholic Diocese of Tucson's Sexual Misconduct Review Board later this month, according to Paul N. Duckro, director of the diocese's Office of Child, Adolescent & Adult Protection. The state Attorney General's Office took the case last year after a conflict of interest arose in the Pinal County Attorney's Office. Pinal County Attorney's Office spokesman Chuck Teegarden this week confirmed that the state has declined to prosecute Stencil, who formerly ministered at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church on the Northwest Side. The state prosecutor's office had been reviewing a complaint by a 21-year-old man dating from 1999 when he was 17 and Stencil was pastor of St. Anthony parish there. -- KMSB, http://www.kmsb.com/ local/ KMSB_ az_priests_ 050703.313d0507.html , © 2003 Arizona Daily Star, May 7 2003.
• Priest named in $150 million sex abuse lawsuit UTICA (NY): A man filed a $150 million lawsuit claiming an assistant pastor abused him as a child and the Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese chose to remain "willfully blind" to it, his attorney said Wednesday. In a lawsuit filed in state Supreme Court in Oneida County, John S. Zumpano claimed that as a 12-year-old at St. Agnes Church's grammar school, the Rev. James Quinn began "a pattern of sexually abusing and exploiting (him), which continued unabated throughout (his) school years." Diocese officials showed "willful indifference and a reckless or intentional disregard" to the abuse from 1963 to 1970 and took no steps to investigate or stop it, the lawsuit claimed. "My client is a basket case today. He barely makes it day to day. He is the poster boy for someone who has been abused by a priest. It doesn't get better -- it gets worse," said Zumpano's attorney, Frank Policelli. -- Newsday, http://www.newsday.com/news/ local/wire/ny-bc-ny-- churchabuse0507may07,0,2 491687.story ?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire , May 7, 2003
• Hollingworth loses support of archbishop. AUSTRALIA: Embattled Governor-General Peter Hollingworth last night lost the confidence of Melbourne's Anglican Archbishop Peter Watson, increasing pressure on him to stand down. And Freda Briggs, who co-wrote the Anglican Church report that found Dr Hollingworth had allowed a known pedophile to remain a priest when he was Brisbane's archbishop, last night said he should resign in the best interests of child sex abuse victims. Dr Hollingworth yesterday refused to comment. -- The Age, http://www.theage.com.au/ articles/2003/05/07/ 105228 0322989.html , By Phillip Hudson, Greg Roberts, Louise Dodson, Barney Zwartz, May 8 2003
• Church accuser in death inquiry. AUSTRALIA: The State Coroner is investigating the death of a Melbourne woman who recently launched legal action against the Anglican Church and former members of the Anglican clergy, alleging sexual abuse when she was a child. Details of the legal proceedings mentioned in the Melbourne Supreme Court are believed to have been suppressed. The woman, 57, was found dead in Braybrook, Melbourne, on April 22. The Coroners Court expects a police report on the case to be finished by May 20. The death is not suspicious. The woman's funeral was held on Monday at Napier Park Funeral Centre, Bendigo, where she was later cremated. -- The Age, http://www.theage.com.au/ articles/2003/05/07/ 1052280323194.html , By Martin Daly, May 8 2003.
• Diocesan panel letting all abuse cases be heard. NORTHAMPTON (MA): A local leader of a Catholic lay group dedicated to promoting reform within the church said she is pleased that the Springfield Roman Catholic Diocese is reaching out to victims of priest sexual abuse - even those who have elected to file suit against the church. At a recent meeting between members of the local chapter of the Voice of the Faithful, http://www.votf.org/ , and Bishop Thomas L. Dupre of the Springfield Diocese, Dupre outlined the rights of those alleging sexual abuse by priests to tell their story before the Commission to Investigate Improper Conduct of Diocesan Personnel, commonly called the Misconduct Commission. Specifically at issue were the rights of anyone who has filed a lawsuit alleging abuse by a priest to appear before the diocese's decade-old commission. The matter had caused some confusion among regular church-goers, and even among those within the hierarchy of the church, some of whom had thought the commission was closed to those who had taken their cases to court. -- Hampshire Gazette, http://www.gazettenet.com/ 05072003/news/5696.htm , By Kathleen Mellen, Wednesday, May 7, 2003.

Morrissey's departure was announced Thursday, more than a week after her last day on April 28. It was not immediately clear if she had been fired. Coyne said the search for Morrissey's successor began the day she left, but said the search had no specific timetable. The Baltimore Archdiocese is dealing with another crisis as another family sues a former Catholic schoolteacher who is now in prison for sexually abusing students. WBAL-TV 11 NEWS I-Team reporter Lisa Robinson reported that the lawsuit is based on abuse that took place at St. Thomas Aquinas School in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood in the 2001-2002 school year. That's when David Czajkowski, 38, (pictured in the paper), was a teacher at the Catholic school. Czajkowski is currently behind bars serving a five-year sentence after pleading guilty to sexually abusing students between 1999 and 2001. • Fresh child abuse scandal hits church AUSTRALIA: Fresh allegations about child sex abuse in the Anglican church have emerged in the Victorian town of Seymour, north of Melbourne. A group of parishioners alleges a former priest at the town's Anglican church abused altar boys for a period of 30 years, starting in the late 1960s. Father Sappsford was due to face trial next month after one of his alleged victims came forward in 1996 but the priest died unexpectedly in March. Former priest Father Paul Walker counselled one of the alleged victims and says the truth needs to be told. "I've worked on many cases over the years, obviously. This is the only one that has actually made me physically sick," he said. The mother of one alleged victim, who does not want to be identified, says justice still needs to be done. -- ABC (Australia), http://www.abc.net.au/news/justin/nat/newsnat-8may2003-15.htm , May 8 03
