BOSTON
LAWYERS for the archdiocese of Boston and alleged victims of former priest John Geoghan have met in an attempt to finalise a deal that could give up to $60 million to 86 people who say he molested them.
The tentative agreement was reached late on Monday, the Boston Globe reported. It will need the signatures of all 86 plaintiffs and the 17 defendants, including the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Bernard Law.

Abusers: Rudolph Kos, left, and John Geoghan have left a bitter legacy. |
The Church has already paid an estimated $30 million to 100 alleged Geoghan victims since the mid-1990s.
Geoghan was jailed last month for groping a 10-year-old boy. He faces two more criminal trials.
Sexual misconduct by priests has caused enormous damage to the Church. In 1998, nine Dallas altar boys who said they had been abused by former priest Rudolph Kos received $50 million.
Dioceses have sold land and buildings to pay victims. Some have borrowed heavily and insurers have limited coverage. -- ASSOCIATED PRESS
