Mormons acknowledge abuse

NEW YORK

THE head of the Mormon Church, Gordon Hinckley, has acknowledged child sexual abuse in his Church, condemning the sordid and evil abuse. "It is a most despicable and tragic and terrible thing," Mr Hinckley said at the Church's 172nd general conference.

Last year, the Church [of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints] agreed to pay $5.5 million to an Oregon man who claimed it covered up for a paedophile who sexually abused him as a child. Mr Hinckley's remarks came amid allegations of sex abuse against Catholic priests across the United States.
