NSW law change lets woman renew 1950s sex abuse complaint

GOVERNOR-GENERAL Peter Hollingworth may be questioned by New South Wales police over the child sex abuse allegations which almost cost him his job.

The woman who made the allegations also will tell a Church inquiry in Brisbane how Dr Hollingworth, as Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane, protected a bishop who had sexually abused her.
The woman said yesterday she was considering an invitation by NSW police to submit a fresh complaint against the now-retired bishop, Donald Shearman. Police said their offer came after intervention by NSW Police Minister Michael Costa.
Police sources said investigators were likely to invite Dr Hollingworth to explain his knowledge of the alleged abuse of the woman by Bishop Shearman when she was a student in the mid-1950s at a Church boarding school in Forbes, in central western NSW.
The woman has accepted an invitation by the current Brisbane Archbishop, the most Rev. Phillip Aspinall, to give evidence to a Brisbane diocese inquiry examining diocese documents, including papers relating to the complaint against Bishop Shearman.
Dr Hollingworth weathered a storm of protest in February after it was revealed that while archbishop in 1995 he took no action against Bishop Shearman after a meeting in which the bishop admitted his abuse of the girl, which began when she was 14.
After Dr Hollingworth resigned to become Governor General last year, the Bishop Administrator, the Right Rev. Richard Appleby, withdrew Bishop Shearman's permission to officiate.
Dr Hollingworth had to apologise to the woman at a meeting in Government House in March after suggesting in a television interview that she had initiated sex with Bishop Shearman.
The woman said that though she had accepted the apology, she believed the Brisbane inquiry should be told all the facts. Within several hours of Dr Hollingworth hearing of Bishop Shearman's abuse at the 1995 meeting, the then archbishop telephoned her.
"He asked me what I wanted him to do," she said. "I wrote to him and said that at least Donald Shearman should be stopped from preaching."

Dr Hollingworth: May be questioned by police

Dr Hollingworth has said he will co-operate with the inquiry but his office declined to comment yesterday, as did the Brisbane diocese.
The woman filed a complaint to police about Bishop Shearman in 1996 but was told that under laws at the time of the alleged offences, complaints had to be filed within a year.
But a NSW spokesman said legislative changes since then would allow complaints to be investigated and the woman had been invited to submit a detailed statement.
Police in Queensland have contacted a second woman who claims she was sexually abused at the age of 10 by Bishop Shearman in 1952 at a swimming pool in Dubbo, NSW. The bishop has denied the claim.
