Confessional rape? Accused priest Paul Shanley may be jailed for life for rapes in confessional; Boston diocese backs out of settling for $A75m for 86 Fr John Geoghan victims (already paid $28m for 40 victims), other victims cited

U. S. A. flag; Mooney's Miniflags   California, U.S. State, flag; Mooney's Miniflags   BOSTON: Paul Shanley, the priest at the epicentre of the clergy sex-abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church in the U.S., has agreed to return to Massachusetts from California to face criminal charges that he raped a boy.
Sometimes, it was alleged, the rapes took place in a church confessional over a seven-year period.
He could face life imprisonment if convicted.
Father Shanley, 71, is one of the most notorious figures in the sex scandal engulfing the Archdiocese of Boston.

Shanley

Arrested on Friday, he waived his right to fight extradition at a court hearing and will be held without bail until picked up by the Massachusetts authorities.
Massachusetts, U.S. State, flag; Mooney's Miniflags   His court hearing came as the Archdiocese of Boston backed out of a settlement agreement with 86 victims of defrocked priest John Geoghan, saying the deal would strip it of resources.
Rejecting Cardinal Bernard Law's request to sign off on the deal, the archdiocesan finance council refused to fund the agreement, estimated at $A75 million. It said the deal would "leave the archdiocese unable to provide a just and proportional response to other victims".
The archdiocese has already paid $28 million to 40 alleged Geoghan victims since the mid-1990s and faces dozens more claims and hundreds of new allegations against him and other priests.
The scandal in the Boston archdiocese gained national attention in January when Geoghan was convicted of indecent assault and battery of a child, and Father Shanley's arrest was the latest development in the scandal.
