Sydney: The Catholic Church has admitted that victims of sexual abuse were effectively paid hush money, despite a week of denials by Sydney Archbishop George Pell. Guild of Catholic Lawyers' president John McCarthy QC said the Towards Healing charter explicitly stated there should be no restrictions on sex abuse victims speaking out. But investigations revealed that the Church had maintained clauses that forced victims to keep silent if they received compensation. Geoff Fitzpatrick's had told "Sixty Minutes" that he had been silenced. It had been revealed that a woman who was allegedly raped by a priest in 1983 -- and became pregnant -- was last month given $15,000 from the Church on condition she kept quiet about the matter. Dr Pell had at first told Sixty Minutes that victims were in fact required to keep quiet if they accepted compensation, but afterwards he said he had been "ambushed" in the interview. -- The West Australian, Mon June 10 02, p 3 @: Priest Paul Shanley denies 1979-1989 Massachusetts child rape, insurance companies win approval (from a 1990 award) not to pay $1m because Minnesota R.C. officials knew that the priest there had a 15-year offence history The West Australian July 12 02 @: G-G Hollingworth may face police probe, NSW law change lets woman renew 1950s sex abuse complaint, Anglican Bishop Shearman's 'affair' with 14-y-o, allegation re 10-y-o The West Australian Jul 22 02 @: In rift with Cardinal Law, agency to accept lay group's funds , USA's Voice of the Faithful offer, laypeople in both camps resist dictat; The Boston Globe, July 24 02 Perpetrators List kept by Australian campaigner Clare Pascoe Henderson http://www.pip.com.au/~chenderson/perplist.htm Broken Rites religious abuse claimants' Australian support group http://brokenrites.alphalink.com.au Voice of the Faithful to provide a prayerful voice, attentive to the Spirit, through which the Faithful can actively participate in the governance and guidance of the Catholic Church. www.voiceofthefaithful.org Books include Religious life without integrity by Dr Barry Coldrey, 2001, 82 pages, $17.95, P & B Press, P.O.
