Language needed for international use
We were interested in the article by Doreen Bolton in the
January-March issue of the Majellan, under the heading "Be not afraid."
Some years ago my wife and I travelled through much of Europe in a
van. We were assured by friends back home that no matter where one
travelled someone could always speak English. This is misleading.

Most of the people who advise you in such terms have toured in a party where the members themselves speak English and all contacts, such as hotels, cater for English-speaking tourists. But get away from this atmosphere, or become isolated as Doreen was and the situation becomes different. Since our tour we have come to know of the international language Esperanto. We now write to about 30 Esperanto correspondents in as many different parts of the world. It is a pity that this language is not used more universally.

Ni estis interesanta pri la artikolo de Dorina Bolton en la Januaro-al-Marto eldono de la Majellan, sub la rubriko "Ne estu timanta." Antauh iom da jaroj mia edzino kaj mi vojaghis tra multe da Euhropo en domveturilo. Ni certigis per amikoj en nia hejmlando ke chie oni veturilas iu povas paroli anglan. Chi tiu estas miskondukanta.

Plejmulto de la personoj kiu informas onin en tia esprimoj estis vojaghanta en grupo en kiu la membroj mem parolas anglan, kaj tutaj kontaktejoj, ekzemple hoteloj, provizas por angla-parolantaj turistoj. Sed, irus el chi tio atmosfero, auh izolighis kiel Dorina estis, kaj la situacio farighus malsimilan. Post nia vojagho ni sciighis pri la internacia lingvo Esperanto. Ni nun skribas al proksimuma 30 Esperantistaj korespondantoj en tiom diversaj partoj de la mondo. Domaghe ke chi tio lingvo ne uzas pli universale.
