VALENCIAN AND
CATALONIA
On the other hand, the number of affected
by the outbreak of legionella of Mataró (Barcelona) rose the number
to 32 with 12 new cases, according to the last data of the Council of Health
of the Generalitat of Catalonia, whereas the appearance of other two cases
in Alcoy (Valencia) and Segorbe (Castellón) was added to the 12
existing ones in the Valencian Community.
Of the 32 patients of Mataró, 28 remained
entered in the hospital of this Barcelonian municipality.
The 12 new ones
affected were five women and seven men with ages between the 36 and 83
years.
The woman of 83 years was the unique one who
remains in the Unit of Cuidados Intensives (UCI), although its state was
not serious, according to the health administration.
The City council of Mataró and the
Council of Health are jointly developing the investigation to discover
which is the origin of this outbreak.
At the moment three positive results of three
cooling towers have been obtained and are pending the results of the analyses
of one fourth tower. The treatment of shock with chlorinated disinfectants
in the affected towers has already practiced.
Like preventive measure, also it has been
come to the closing of the ornamentales sources of the zone.
Both new affected of the Valencian Community
they are a neighbouring man of 56 years of Alcoy that is admitted the Virgin
Hospital of the Irises of the Valencian municipality and a woman of 68
years of Segorbe (Castellón) that remains hospitalized in the Hospital
of Sagunto.
A private company is the most probable origin
of the center of Alcoy, according to informed Friday the Valencian Generalitat,
after confirming the existence of the bacterium in the facilities.
Of the other three patients who were entered,
one of them remains in the UCI of the Hospital of Sagunto and the other

Barcelona
Mataró.
A woman of 83 years became the first victim of the outbreak of
legionella that affects the district of Cerdanyola in Mataró.
The outbreak, nevertheless, seems to have begun to end after to have reached its
culminating point during the weekend, informed conseller of Health, Eduard Rius.
The deceased, Isabel To Z., have been victim of legionella of sudden way. Ever
since it began to notice the first symptoms of the infection until it died
yesterday to four of the dawn they happened less than 48 hours. Widow and with
three children, one of her relatives described it yesterday like " a woman who
was strong as an oak " until one week ago. At the beginning of the last week it
underwent a fall, the nose was broken and they had to her to put seven stitches
in the forehead. In order to recover, it decided to leave to take a walk by the
park, just in the zone of the outbreak of legionella.
But Saturday began to notice that it cost to her to breathe. Sunday admitted the
hospital of Mataró, where the doctors confirmed that he underwent a respiratory
infection caused by legionella. And yesterday, Monday, died to four of the dawn,
according to informed one into their grandsons.
It is probable that the deceased contracted legionella not during her strolls by
the park, but before undergoing the fall the last week. But before its immune
system eliminated the bacterium, Isabel To Z. underwent the fall that left it in
a weakness state and legionella took advantage of the moment to be multiplied
and to cause pneumonía.
According to the estimations of the Department of Health, in effect, the
outbreak that affects Mataró has due to and in a while massive a concrete
emission of bacteria to the air happened after the 25 of July and before the 5
of August. This hypothesis is based on which the outbreak of legionella has
appeared of sudden way, with an abrupt increase of cases at the end of the last
week. Since the infection usually has a period of incubation of 5 to 15 days,
this suggests all the affected ones approximately contracted legionella at the
same moment.
A joint investigation of the Generalitat and the City council of Mataró has
allowed to identify four cooling towers from which the infection can come. To
the delay of knowing which of them is in the origin of the bud, the four have
been disinfected. For this reason, Health considers very improbable that they
are continued producing contagios at the present moment.
The declivity in the number of income by legionella in the hospital of Mataró
also suggests the outbreak is sending. After the ten new patients entered the
Saturday and the thirteen of Sunday, the number was reduced yesterday to seven.
" We cannot give by closed the bud, but it seems that it is in a reduction
process ", declared conseller Eduard Rius yesterday.
The balance, to the closing of this edition, was of 38 confirmed cases
oflegionella. Of them, six people have been registered, 31 remains entered - two
in serious state and one have died.
Three died by legionella and more than 50 cases in Valencia, Country Vasco and Catalonia
In which it goes of August, three deaths by legionella, two known yesterday in Mataró and Biscay have been registered, respectively, and more than 50 cases by effects of this bacterium in Catalonia, Valencia and Basque Country. A woman of 83 years who entered Sunday in the hospital of Mataró and that suffered cardiovascular problems has been the first victim of the bud from legionella.
Two cases of I infect of the bacterium have been detected in Biscay, and one of them, of 71 years of age, has passed away because of one serious cardio-respiratory and renal pathology.
In Jaén, the Delegation of Health has aimed at the bath of Reolid, in Albacete, as the "factor of clearer risk" in the case of a neighbor of Villacarrillo (Jaén), of 77 years, that the past passed away 5 of August by legionella.
